OSHA Finds Amazon Workers Exposed to High Risk of Musculoskeletal Disorders

Six Warehouses Cited for Safety Violations

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has issued citations against Amazon at six warehouse locations for exposing workers to a high risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). The investigative findings indicated that workers at facilities across the country had to contend with ergonomic hazards that could lead to pain, injuries, and long-term health problems.

An examination by The New York Times into how the pandemic unfolded inside Amazon's warehouses revealed concerns raised by workers about long working hours, high injury rates, and the company's pace of work.

Key Findings from the OSHA Investigation

OSHA investigators found that Amazon workers were exposed to the following hazards:

  • Repetitive lifting and carrying of heavy objects
  • Awkward postures due to the use of conveyor belts
  • Slip and fall hazards
  • Improperly designed workstations
  • Lack of training on proper lifting techniques

These hazards can lead to a variety of MSDs, including sprains, strains, tendonitis, and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Call for Improved Safety Measures

OSHA has ordered Amazon to take immediate steps to address the safety violations. The company is required to develop and implement a comprehensive plan to reduce the risk of MSDs and provide training to workers on proper lifting techniques and ergonomic principles.

Labor advocates and unions are calling for Amazon to go beyond the minimum requirements and make a real commitment to worker safety. They argue that the company has the resources to invest in safety measures that will protect its workforce.
