Apple and Île-de-France Mobilités announce new iPhone feature
Touch your iPhone or Apple Watch to the turnstile and go
CUPERTINO, Calif. — May 21, 2024 — Apple and Île-de-France Mobilités today introduced an easy and convenient way for iPhone and Apple Watch users to travel on the Paris metro, bus, and RER system. Starting today, customers can add their Navigo travel pass to the Wallet app on their iPhone or Apple Watch and use it to tap and go at turnstiles and on buses and trams.
"We're excited to bring the convenience and security of Apple Pay to public transportation in Paris," said Jennifer Bailey, Apple's vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet. "With just a tap of your iPhone or Apple Watch, you can now travel seamlessly throughout the city."
"This new feature is a major step forward for public transportation in Paris," said Valérie Pécresse, President of the Île-de-France region and President of Île-de-France Mobilités. "It makes it easier and more convenient than ever for our customers to get around the city."
To add a Navigo pass to the Wallet app, customers simply need to open the Wallet app on their iPhone or Apple Watch and tap the "+" button. Then, they can scan their Navigo pass or enter the pass number and expiration date. Once the pass is added to the Wallet app, customers can use it to tap and go at turnstiles and on buses and trams.
The Navigo pass in the Wallet app is secure and convenient. It uses the same technology as Apple Pay, which is trusted by millions of people around the world. When a customer taps their iPhone or Apple Watch at a turnstile or on a bus or tram, their pass is encrypted and sent to the transit operator's system. The transit operator's system then verifies the pass and authorizes the customer to travel.
The Navigo pass in the Wallet app is available now for iPhone and Apple Watch users in Paris.
