A dramatic explosion on the sun has unleashed a powerful geomagnetic storm that is expected to hit Earth's atmosphere tonight, Friday, May 10, 2024. According to the National Weather Service, the storm is expected to trigger intense auroras visible as far south as Pennsylvania and Oregon.

The solar flare, captured by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory on Thursday, has set off a severe geomagnetic storm watch for much of the United States. Chad Myers, a meteorologist for CNN, explains that tonight's storm could be even more impressive than the last one, enabling more of the country to witness the cosmic fireworks.

The Space Weather Prediction Center issued an "extreme" solar storm warning on Friday night, indicating the storm's intensity. This level 5 storm represents an escalation from the level 4 alert issued earlier.
