Former Gophers star reveals cancer has returned over six years after first diagnosis
Former Gophers fullback Casey O'Brien announced Tuesday that his cancer has returned more than six years after he was first diagnosed.
O'Brien, who played for the Gophers from 2010-2013, was first diagnosed with stage 3 Hodgkin lymphoma in 2016. He underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatment and was declared cancer-free in 2017.
O'Brien says he's "not giving up" and is "determined to beat this thing again."
O'Brien's announcement has been met with an outpouring of support from the Gophers community and beyond.
"Casey is a fighter and he's going to beat this again," said Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck. "Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family."
O'Brien's story is an inspiration to us all. He's shown us that anything is possible if you never give up.
We're all behind you, Casey!
